Vinnie Colaiuta Part 2

INTERVIEW WITH VINNIE COLAIUTA part 2

CB:  In my life I did the same thing, having a lot of time on the road, I did a lot of book reading, searching for truth to my questions of life and it’s funny after years of doing that – the answer was right there and it was so SIMPLE. That’s what’s so beautiful about a relationship with Jesus Christ, it’s not complicated, it’s not intellectual, it CAN be, if you want it to be..

VC: Yes, it’ll satisfy you on that level, but..

CB: It’s a very simple thing..

VC: Yeah, the beauty and the profundity is that even a child can get it yet it will keep theologians busy forever ..

CB: (laughs)

VC: You know it’s God, there’s no human that could provide that.

CB: You’ve done a lot of scripture reading the past 5 years, do you have a favorite scripture, or favorite part of the Bible?

VC: For me, my favorite of the synoptic Gospels is JOHN. I love segments of James and Galatians and there’s a lot, but John, John tells the LOVE STORY, greatest love story ever told. It’s probably the most mystical of the gospels and it reveals it as the love story. And I’m not just talking about romanticism, I’m talking about a GODLY love .. it appeals to me. That’s my favorite.

CB: How has the Holy Spirit affected you when you sit down at the drums? Or what new dimensions has that added?

VC: It’s given me a dimension that on some level I’m aware of all the time .. that I now understand why I’m doing what I’m doing but from a completely new dimension. It would be easy to say, “I’m doing what I’m doing because this is what I’ve been gifted with and this what I have a responsibility to do because I have a propensity towards this.” That’s all well and good but it falls short of the big picture. I do it to glorify God. I do it to praise Him.

CB: Amen.

VC: I do that all the time, it doesn’t matter what circumstance or environment I find myself in externally. So I have that background processing awareness all the time and sometimes it comes into the front. And I have an attitude of gratitude. And sometimes I fall short miserably but I know amidst all my gripes, I’m still grateful .. I’m still grateful .. that’s there ya know. I wrestle with Him a lot because we all have that part of us, that ego, that “little king” that doesn’t want to give it up, doesn’t want to die daily. And I find that “little king” wrestling the Holy Spirit. But at the same time having an attitude of gratitude and realizing, “Hey, you know what? Above all else and no matter what, I’m praising God and that’s why I’m doing this.” So, also that one understands that I’m not here to satisfy your standard, or what you think I should be, to have your approval, and I say YOU as a generalization, but to please God with what I do. And then God looks at the heart. That’s not an excuse for us to be shotty or slipshot with what we do, but for us to do what we do and articulate it well as a result of us wanting to please God and the result of us wanting to praise God versus thinking just because we have some skill sets that we’re pleasing Him with our skill sets. It’s, what’s our heart? What’s our intent? It’s not the other way around. We’re consistently flipping it the other way .. it’s that ego thing again, that built in thing. I’m just as guilty as anybody if not more so .. but that’s my awareness that the Holy Spirit has imparted to me.

CB: Alright, Praise God.

VC: Amen.

CB: Thank you Vinnie.

VC: Thank you Carlos.
